We decided to go ashore for the day despite it being only 5C last night and not much warmer during the day - and it rained so much we had to go for a pizza and a bottle of wine to cope!

Known for its beautiful Christmas lights, tonight is the night they are switched on. We met Dave and Marcy for the rather underwhelming event but then wandered around the city to enjoy them. The Lightner Museum had stayed open for the evening so we spent an amusing time finding the weirdest objects in the collection of this rich American collector of the early 19th century.

Favourite items included:

A large music machine that played 12 tunes from large copper discs-possibly the first juke box

Hair art much more intricate and frivolous than the mourning jewellery I have seen before

Rota the Lion - an African lion presented by the Zoological Society of London to Winston Churchill in 1943 as a war mascot and to commemorate the magnificent victories of northern Africa!

And perhaps my favourite – the beaded turtle pouch to keep ones umbilical cord in!
