The east winds finally shifted so we left Key Largo enroute
for the Bimini Islands in the Bahamas. We stopped at a few of the snorkelling
spots on the Florida Barrier Reef during the day, the first one being Dry
Rocks, where Christ of the Abyss resides. At 2.5m, it weighs around
260 kg, and the concrete base about 9 tons. It is one of several
copies of an original bronze statue near Portifino, in the Mediterranean. It was
placed there in 1954 and is near the spot where Dario Gonzatti, the first
Italian to use SCUBA gear, died in 1947!
