This morning we got up early to experience the island's summer flea market. Seemed like everyone on the island joined the queue to get in - or at least catch up with any gossip. We had arrived an hour early in error so had plenty of time to people watch. We also watched the mail plane land. The airstrip is as tiny as it looks and pedestrians would be ill advised to cross when the light is flashing.
Having failed to meet Claude there as planned, we cycled to Sabine Farm to find her. This house has been in the Pettit family since 1918 and purchased for its beautiful view of the bay and it's sunsets. Benj's great- grandparents had a parting of the ways an she removed the north wing of the house and had it moved about 150 meters away, the smaller building on the left.
The crib is exactly like the one Nick was going to make for Claude when she was born, from beautiful oak that has been in our shed all this time.....
Jethro read from an article someone had sent them about Elizabeth Bishop, a well known American poet, who rented the house for several summers in the 60's and 70's.  She described Northaven as full of fearfully rich people who dressed in rags and kept their homes very far apart! It is still fairly accurate, at least in describing the summer people (or away people as they are sometimes described). The locals that live here year round are most;y lobster-men now the sheep are gone.
