12 Sept – Hawks Cove, Maryland
The next morning we went for a sail around the bay – more of a motor really as there was no wind. Kurt is a serious fisherman (and hunter) and brought much equipment and expertise with him - todays questions were on fishing. A lazy day waiting for fish to bite and drinking beer that seems to be a crucial part of the process!
We stayed the night at a quiet bay right in the north of Chesapeake Bay and Kurt managed to catch a large dogfish which he returned after a brief moment of impressing us all.
Supper was delicious sausages made from the deer caught earlier in the year. He and his friends represent how we should all really acquire our meat. They bother to understand the animals’ behaviour and the habitat in which they live, killing targeted individuals more ‘humanely’ than some slaughterhouses. They also learned how to butcher the carcasses, and make the sausages we ate. I’m not sure I could do it, but I agree it is a better way for the people, the animals and the environment.
