Spent the morning checking out Portland, starting with its founder George Cleeve.

We visited the Fish Market – very fishy; the Old District – with its attractive Federal architecture; Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s birthplace – of The Song of Hiawatha fame; the Time and Temperature Building – originally the Chapman building, it was built in 1924 and housed Maine’s first indoor shopping centre. In 1964, 2 additional floors were added and the huge time and temperature display on the roof that now gives it its name.

Sadly not enough time for fizzy fun!

We left Portland at about 14.00 for a pleasant sail 24nm sail to Cape Porpoise Harbour.  Definitely a working harbour from the many lobster boats and smell of fish.
