Returned to the house in the morning to collect Karen and bring her to Baltimore harbour where there is a weekend celebration of the end of the 1812-1814 war. Regarded as the war that defeated the British is this part of the US, as a battle with no victor in much of the rest, and barely heard of by the British!

Today was the practice session by the Blue Angels who have their main display tomorrow. It was quite cloudy though so they were limited in their manoeuvres – and no Fat Albert.

In the evening Chuck and Gretchen joined us in their boat and rafted up along again. We then watched a spectacular fireworks display over Fort McHenry, intended to recreate the battle itself. It included displays that I have never seen before, where a design is made from the fireworks themselves rather than from the structures on which they are launched. Photographs do not do them justice as ever but the first is of the American flag (famously seen flying over Fort McHenry the morning after the battle). The second is the letters USA.

When it was over we joined the hundreds of boats leaving the area and returned to Stony Creek. We anchored at the entrance though, deciding not to go through the narrow bridge in the dark with only one engine to steer with - still waiting for the replacement propeller.
