14 May - St Augustine, Florida, USA 29:53.713N 81:18.565W
About 15 miles from St Augustine the wind veered to the north making the sea much more uncomfortable as we were sailing into it. We contacted the coastguard who said it was a hazardous inlet and they could advise us on entering at night. We decided to ‘Heave to’ for the night (set the sails so that the boat is stalled and only drifts with the current a little) and entered the inland waterway in the morning. This part of the coast is known for its many lighthouses, all of which are painted in different designs
We were greeted with another dolphin welcoming committee and a manatee that spent about an hour near the boat. St Augustine is the oldest town in the US and we have anchored in a fantastic location right on the waterfront near the ‘Lion Bridge’. A Spanish Fort and manatee in our back garden today!
