We had an interesting day driving about although it seemed more like being in India! 40% of the population here are from the 'East Indies' (indentured labourers brought by the British 150 years ago when slavery was abolished); 37% from Africa; 27% mixed race (called Dougalls) and the rest white Europeans and Chinese!  We went to the Pitch Lakes, the largest natural deposit of asphalt in the world. Rather smelly as the rainy season creates sulphur lakes in the gaps. Then we drove through the old fields which were extraordinarily attractive, with little red and black 'donkeys' in clearings. Next stop was the largest Hindu statue of Hanuman outside India (26m) next to a very pink temple where a wedding was taking place, followed by the 'Underwater Temple'. It was built by a single man over 25 years, on an island of old building blocks as he wasn't given permission to build it on colonial land! Lastly we went to the beach to discover most other people in Trindad had the same idea. Got stuck in traffic and by the time we got there the sandflies were out and about so we didn't stay. Many people, much loud Indian music, beautiful bay!
We are off north again tomorrow to meet Claude and Max in St Lucia a week today,  back to Grenada and The Grenadines....Inline image 2Inline image 2Inline image 4Inline image 5Inline image 3Inline image 2
