We decided to stay on the reef overnight so we could go and look at the grouper again this morning. Not as successful a plan as we hoped – the sea swell was considerable giving rise to a bumpy night; and the grouper weren’t as interested in seeing us and had moved on! Undeterred we set off for another snorkelling spot, this time the wreck of the SS Benwood. A 380ft Norwegian merchant freighter carrying phosphate rock, she was travelling north as another freighter was travelling south. It was 1942 and rumours of German U-boats in the area  forced travel without navigational lights. The collision caused sufficient damage to the Benwood that it sank quickly. No loss of life though and it is now a protected artificial reef within the Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.

Visibility not great but there were divers that max went to look at and many bubbles to play in and photograph!
