Porto and Baiona

Whilst in Porto, I spotted there were several modes of transport to choose. As Simon has mentioned, we walked across the Luis 1 bridge lower level then took the funicular up to the town.  Another option was to get a cable car to the top level.  Once on the other side of the river, there was the choice of tuk-tuks whizzing around the streets, trams along the riverside, and a road train. On the upper level of the bridge, a train ran alongside the footpath. Health and Safety is quite different here! Boat trips were also available to see the six bridges along the river. And of course walking, we've done a lot!

Another site of interest was the municipal laundry. A building with several large shallow tanks of water and a wash-lady who was scrubbing blankets with a bar of soap and brush, before moving around the tanks to rinse them. Outside was an array of washing lines suspended on wooden tripods. Quite a sight but I think I'll stick to my automatic washer!

We left Porto and Portugal early on Weds morning for the passage to Baiona which we visited in September 2023 (blog #27). Last time there was the J80s world championships, this time it is Galicia 52 Super Series, so there are a lot of very serious racing sailors around and together with their support crews. Containers with all the equipment, large ribs ferrying people and kit, photo ribs, smart cars to transport people, Porsche, Aston Martin etc., a huge amount of money needed for this type of racing. There are some seriously large sails being lifted off the boats to be checked and repaired if necessary each day. At least this time we are berthed in the better marina, although I'm not sure what the VIP boat next door thinks of us. Our boat is decorated with a line of washing and a basil plant, they are serving champagne and have a wonderful flower arrangement on the cockpit table!

Today, Thursday, after an interior boat clean, food shop and a meal cooked for tomorrow, we went out for a late lunch. Sea bass, monk fish and paella main courses, scallop gratin, calamari, cheese and ham croquettes and padron peppers to start. All delicious. We are back on board enjoying the late afternoon sun now the clouds and showers have cleared.

We are leaving tomorrow for an anchorage midway to Muxia which will be our penultimate stop before A Coruna.
