2 days in Gijon
When we had recovered from the Biscay crossing and caught up with some much needed sleep we set about exploring Gijon.
Not the prettiest of towns but a delightful “old quarter” and a vast sandy beach.

Monday was rather a quiet day, but far more life and bars and restaurants open on Tuesday. We even saw a Michelin starred restaurant…. definitely above our budget.

Having struggled with our rather ropey knife selection on board (Mrs Butler…. you know the importance of a good sharp blade!) Simon was  straight into an amazing knife emporium…. if you need a sword in Gijon, or a hunting blade, or even a fish filleting knife, we can point you in the right direction….. Not withstanding our poor Spanish and the near non existent English of the shopkeeper, we walked out with a beautiful knife that means our next catch at sea will be rather more neatly presented!

A bar overlooking the seafront provided a much needed refreshment stop with beer, wine and delicious tapas.

Tuesday. The laundry was done and hung in the sunshine. Finances sorted, books balanced and a few other jobs accomplished……. We keep having to remind ourselves this isn’t a holiday but our life for the next few months….. chores still need doing! We rewarded ourselves with a trip to the beach for a swim, pan fried tuna (yes, again) with fresh bread for lunch and a lazy afternoon.

Tuna steaks marinated in garlic, ginger, soy sauce and honey, with green veg for dinner and our fairy lights twinkle as we sit out on deck and enjoy them.

We are seeing a few of the same boats regularly now, and people often stop for a chat or discussion about destinations, equipments or weather apps.

60Nm to Ribadeo on Wednesday; forecast doesn’t look too hopeful for much sailing but as I’m sure you have gathered by now, I rarely believe a word of them!!
