Indian River trip in Portsmouth Dominica Monday morning at 7 we had arranged for Martin Providence, one of the excellent local tour guides to take us on a trip up the Indian River. It is within the National Park and a place of great beauty and resource. We saw: land crabs, lizards, mullet, hummingbirds, herons, bananaquits, kingfishers, egrits, bloodwood trees with enormous buttress roots, sugar canes, huge bamboos, giant vines, porcelain roses, hibiscus, ginger lilies, and many, many more I don’t remember. Dominica is the land of 365 rivers, 120 bird species, 20 crab varieties, 10 volcanos and so much more. Martin was so knowledgeable, a qualified botanist, and obviously very proud of his country. When we tied up the row boat and walked alongside the river bank it was incredibly peaceful and tranquil.       We passed by one of the ’sets’ from Pirates of the Caribbean - a house on the water…. have to watch the movies now to see where it appeared!  Martin took a leaf and deftly wove a hummingbird for Catherine and I….. hopefully we can get them home to decorate our Christmas trees. As he sang his country’s National Anthem for us under the canopy of the trees with the river running past, it was a very moving moment.   We have arranged with him to do a full day car tour on Wednesday around the northern part of the Island. Nigel is still not able to use his local phone Sim, he has tried everything he can think of and is exasperated. It makes no sense as Simon is on the same plan and 🤞is working fine. So we are all “hot-spotting” and keeping to minimum use at the moment. Wi fi ashore seems like hens teeth but we are going to try a new bar for coffee this morning so might get lucky. Sally |
