Nazare 39:35.109N, 009:04.369W 26th May 2025 We made the day passage from Oeires on Saturday, unfortunately the prevailing wind was right on the bow so 10 out of 11 hours under engine. It was a very peaceful hour near the end when the diesel engine went off but sadly not enough speed being generated by the wind. The staff here at Nazare met us on the berth, took our lines and were very friendly. Pre-pepared chicken curry for dinner after a long hot shower and hair-wash… Yesterday, Sunday was Catherine’s birthday so a special breakfast of smoked salmon, scrambled eggs and avocado, coffee and toast. What a treat! A quick tidy up, fresh water wash for Cassini, showers for us and off to explore Nazare... where there was more to see and more tourists than we had anticipated. We had been told that the “museum of the big wave” was well worth a visit so after walking along the “prom” beside another beautiful sandy beach (Portugal has so many lovely beaches) we went up the hillside via the funicular. The old village, at the top of the hill is very picturesque and another short walk to the fort at the end of the peninsular brought us to the museum: unfortunately for us it is closed for maintenance! Very disappointing but the walk did afford us some spectacular views over the North beach where all the world record breaking surfing takes place. Back to the old village, found a quiet bar for a drink and a sit down and then returned to the town at sea level via the funicular. Catherine chose a great spot for a birthday lunch. She and Nigel had a “special” fish stew "; assorted white fish, prawns, clams potatoes and onions and Simon and I shared a 2 person shellfish stew, lobster, crab, clams, langoustine, prawns all in a fabulous sauce; both absolutely delicious. Back to Cassini for library time and nap time for some. An episode of “Beyond Paradise” from the BBC and we were all ready for bed. Definitely a birthday to remember.
