First night at sea
So, having motor sailed to Bonchurch on the south side of the Isle of Wight we decided that there was enough of a puff to put out the staysail…..a most useful sail in our arsenal. The wind topped out at about 18k, we put the 1st reef in the main and were progressing nicely at between 5 and 7kn of sailing speed……..encouragingly, even in the desired direction!

A rather scratch supper of pasta, tuna and tomato was put together by the off watch crew at 6pm in rather 'tippy-upy” conditions, but it was tasty nonetheless……

Then we were into 3hrs on, 3 hrs off through the night…….across the shipping lanes, busy, but with AIS back in action, not too challenging for us novices amongst the crew!

Sadly for us the wind dropped off around 10pm and it was back to engine power. However it wasn’t all bad, the sea was very calm, the sky was clear and the stars were magical…… shooting stars a-plenty!

Alderney was in sight, and the tide was carrying us at over 7kn……unfortunately we couldn’t make the most of it as our destination was the duty free fueling berth at St Peterport where we didn’t want to be before 8am!  Typical.

However, the sun came up, the lobster pots were visible and avoidable, and we were able to berth for fuel immediately.

From there, straight onto a walk ashore berth, a quick tidy of Cassini and stowage of our gear, then the most important meal of the day, so the saying goes, A big fat boy truckers! delicious….. eggs, bacon, sausage, black pudding, hash browns, beans, tomato, mushrooms. Just what we all needed.

Back on board, a few jobs to complete ( there are never NO jobs when you own a boat), and a passage plan for Roscoff tomorrow. I fear it will be an early start, but hopefully with winds of a Goldilocks variety (just the right strength and in just the right direction) we should make it there by the close of play tomorrow.

We will let you know……
