The Baths Yesterday (Monday) we motored away from Cooper Island along to The Baths on Virgin Gorda. It was only about 4 miles but again we needed an early start to be sure of finding a vacant day anchoring buoy close to the attraction. Most amazingly as we approached the anchorage Simon spotted at least 2 whales, we think which were humpback - they migrate through the islands from January to April each year. To see a spout of exhaled water for real, not camera footage was a massive privilege. I did try to get some photographs but not very successful. Far better just to keep watching with my own eyes and live in the moment. The Baths are a BVI national parks trust protected area. An unusual formation of large granite boulders where the sea washes between the huge rocks and shafts of sunlight peep through the gaps. We dinghied to the rope line and then had to swim ashore, it was quite boisterous, but with flippers and a guiding line ashore we safely reached the beach. There is a short trail through the rocks from one beach to the next; a reasonably level of agility is required in places, but there are helpful ropes to guide you and some steps have been put in place since our last visit 10 years ago. Unfortunately we mistimed our arrival to coincide with coach loads of cruise ship passengers, so it was all a bit “hurry up and wait”, but still an incredible natural phenomenon and worth the visit. Back to Cassini and we left our mooring buoy for the short hop along the coast to Spanish Town on Virgin Gourda. We refuelled and replenished our water tanks, went to the supermarket and Simon took his briefcase down to the office to do the paperwork to depart the British Virgin Islands. A night at anchor so free!😃. Sally ![]() |
