Time to be tourists and a few boat jobs….
Whilst Catherine and Nigel have been visiting family in Tenerife, Simon and I have taken the opportunity for some local exploration in Las Palmas, a few delicious lunches out (the black rice with seafood was particularly excellent), and a couple of jobs on Cassini.

We spent some time in the historic quarter, climbed the 162 steps of the cathedral Santa Ana for wonderful views and wandered through the cobbled streets away from the crowds, enjoying a couple of drinks along the way and doing some “people watching”.

New neighbours have arrived on our pontoon over the last couple of days: American, South African and some Australians amongst them, on a couple of enormous catamarans which always look so cumbersome, but with bow thrusters/ engines on all 4 corners, will turn on a sixpence!

We have spent some time lazing on the beach which seems to be an extension of the school playground here…….. beach volleyball, paddle boarding and football all been seen.

I have cleaned the cockpit cushions and re-coated the teak deck with Semco protector. We'll have to get some more when Cassini reaches the Caribbean. It’s not stocked here, but as it’s made in the USA, I imagine we will be able to buy it over there.

Simon has put on a new vang rope, replacing some very old and worn rope. He's mended the electric fan in the aft cabin (really only for use when on shore power probably, but great for boosting the air movement in harbour) and had another go at fixing the persistant, very loud, and annoying squeak of wood-on-wood in our cabin, mostly underway and on a starboard tack when we are heeled over a bit…. fingers crossed!

We are waiting for the riggers to come aboard in the next day or so to re-tension our rigging which hopefully means we will sail better on stbd tack, and another annoying creaking clicking noise down the shrouds goes away.

Thoughts are beginning to turn to tasks in preparation for the Atlantic crossing; the port-a-cabins which are the hub of the World Cruising Association HQ, have been craned into position. Next week the office will open and things will get going for real!

I am looking forward to getting home next week. It will be wonderful to catch up with everyone, but I’m not sure I’m ready for UK weather again. It’s still hot and sunny here whilst I read about Storm Babet causing chaos at home.
