Boxing day… a crime has been committed On our first couple of days in Antigua, we noticed a lady doing the rounds of the anchorage selling fresh patisseries. On Saturday we decided to take advantage and Isobel delivered a lovely selection of fresh pastries to go with our morning coffee, and quiches for lunch. She would be back every day she said, even Christmas Day. Sadly the big day dawned but no pastries; we assumed we’d misunderstood. Boxing Day dawned, Isobel was still missing so we messaged her to see if everything was OK. Unfortunately her dinghy driver did not turn up on Christmas day (despite assurances that he would), and overnight somebody had sabotaged her dinghy, leaving it partially deflated, stuck fast under the dinghy jetty, leaving Isobel unable to deliver her wares. A rival baker perhaps? We arranged to pick up some pastries from her son, and of course we did the chivalrous thing and offered assistance with her dinghy. When we got back to the dock, she'd managed to release the boat from under the jetty, but it was still only just afloat and and had a lot of water in it. Simon and I set about blowing up the sides with our dinghy pump and bailing out the water. After about half an hour we had restored her dinghy to operational status. Duty done, we’re hopeful of delivery as normal tomorrow. As you might imagine, she was quite grateful, and we were invited to her restaurant for dinner, La Brasserie. Did I mention she was French? Well she is and we are looking forward to a lovely evening in one of the best restaurants in English Harbour! Helping a damsel in distress can have its benefits! Wait… I can hear Isobel’s dinghy arriving and her plaintive “Bonjour Cassini’s”. Pasties safely onboard. ![]() |
