Corfu

Spent a few days fixing systems and then travelling around the island. Corfu
is a lovely place but a bit short on government services / civic pride. The
paving is a mess, weeds and tall grass everywhere. No graffiti and not a lot
of litter unlike the poorer parts of Italy but a general disinterest in
keeping everything ship shape. The people make up for it - everyone happy
with a sense of humour and apparent love of life - handsome and friendly. We
toured the Achillelon Palace built in two years 1888- 9 for Elisabeth,
Empress of Austria and later sold to Kaiser Wilhelm - impressive, fabulous
setting, interesting militaristic memorabilia.

The island benefits from an abundant rainfall and is therefore much greener
than Croatia and has a greater variety of food. In Croatia the menu is all
about fish. In Corfu it is also about meat and veg. Dinner with the boys
Saturday at the Liston was an assorted meats platter - chicken, pork, lamb -
very good. Had a great fish dinner at Porto Remounda in Corfu town E50 pp.
