Kahia is in the groove, sailing at 7 to 8 knots at
an angle of around 90 degrees with winds from the West 15 to 20
knots.
After a peaceful sail through the night with light SSW
winds and sailing at a speed of around 3 to 4 knots, this new tempo
is very exhilarating.
There was more excitement this morning, when we caught a
6 kilo white tuna at dawn, which meant, all hands on deck. Once the tuna landed
and killed (always the hardest part), we had a luxurious breakfast of scrambled
eggs (the Captain's way) and smoked salmon. After this we got to work with
cleaning the blood off the decks and dodgers, gutting and cutting the fish.
Then, in the galley some tuna was cooked and tinned for long term. Other large
steaks packed in portions and put in the empty
freezer. Two mega steaks will go in the oven for dinner tonight
(and most likely another meal tomorrow).
The watch system was by then completely
scrambled like the eggs but we are catching up on sleep during the day. A
highlight of our watches is listening to the audio book: "At Home", a
fascinating book and history by Bill Bryson on the things of our daily
lives, we so much take for granted. Listening to this in turns, keeps the person
on watch well inspired and awake.
Only 90 nm to Whangarei, we will sail along the coast
and be there tomorrow morning.
Now looking forward to our tuna feast and a glass of
chilled Buzet rose to celebrate a wonderful passage and our last night at
sea.
