We sailed with ease out of Passe de Dumbea, New
Caledonia and had steady 15 knots of wind from the SE for our first day. The sea
was still very lively and rough, so the cook threw a slight fit with
condiments and vegetables rolling all over the galley and tumbling chaotically
in the fridge while preparing the evening meal. We sat tight on our watches
and enjoyed seeing our boat speed being a steady 7 knots.
Our second day started with the sea reducing and
we are now sailing smoothly, which makes life on board very comfortable and
pleasant.
Before leaving, we celebrated Halloween
on 'Papillon' and met Winfried and Ute from s/v 'Anna Maria',
Germany. They run the German weather-net on SSB frequency 10090 KHz at 7am
local time (20.00 UTC). For those who don't speak German "Friede" means peace,
so with Winfried we "win peace" with the weather conditions at sea. He
gives you a complete weather routing for your position for the whole week ahead,
which is updated every day. It's a fantastic way to plan your sailing strategy.
So thanks to 'Anna Maria's' dedication and expertise, we are sailing as far
South as possible to prepare for the upcoming Southerly wind. It is also a real
pleasure to hear the different German accents from the German-Austrian-Swiss
fleet and meet on a very friendly and relaxed net.
Time permitting we still check in with the
'Drifters Net" (SSB: 8131 KHz at 20.30 UTC) and enjoy the accents of our
British-Scottish-Irish-Welsh-American-Canadian fellow sailors and all those
nationalities (especially Dutch) that use English as a second
language...
