Arrived safely after a speedy night passage, forced
to slow down in order to go through Avatoru pass at daybreak and on the last of
the slack water. The atoll is so large that you don't see the other side and
with the strong wind the large extent of water was rough. Exhausted we anchored
off the picture book lagoon huts on stilts of the Kia-Ora Hotel, watching the
dive boats leave, while rinsing off our saloon soft furniture, which got
soaked by a large wave. The hatch was on ventilation, a tiny gap... but water
got everyway, when we were dropping the main sail (into the wind) and we
got swept by a very large wave. This time, Paul was under the wave, clinging
onto the boom just trying to tame the flapping sail into the sail
bag.
We slept into the afternoon and now the wind has
dropped, the sky is overcast and we can put the dry saloon seats back together.
