After Melbourne a quieter stop was needed, so we headed for the hills, the Grampian National Park to be exact. Halls Gap is a popular stop off in the area and looked like a perfect spot for a bit of rest and relaxation.
The campsite was right in the centre of town and very picturesque. It was also very quiet as the school holidays have now ended. Even though in England there are still people holidaying just either side of the main school break, here it seems there is not and everywhere is much more peaceful than we have been used to.
The real treat at this site was the kangaroos, there is a whole mob of them - this is actually the correct collective noun for kangaroos, I checked online! They are everywhere and very tame, coming right up to the tents, presumably looking for food.

Very unconcerned roos!

While we were in the national park, we decided some walking was in order. The first day we walked and drove a bit round the main sites, looking at various waterfalls etc, but the second day we went for a proper walk. Although it was about 10km, the last third was a steep downhill walk, with 1000 steps/stairs making up part of it, which were a bit jarring on the bones! The scenery was fabulous, you could see for miles across the plains. Looking at the map the nearest mountains to us were about 80km away and we could see them quite clearly. You get a really good idea of how vast Australia is doing walks like this and how little there is out there - goodness knows what it will be like when we really 'go bush', as they say here, and hit the outback!

Once we leave here we are heading to Adelaide. We are planning to to stay inland and make our way towards the wine region at Coonawarra. We haven't booked anywhere to stay yet, so will play it by ear and see how we get on. This is the first time we have left somewhere without a new place booked, so let's hope it all works out!
