We left Santa Barbara early on Sunday morning and headed north back to San Francisco. The weather there was looking a bit better than last time, with temperatures in the low 20's and sunshine. Driving up, we took the Pacific Highway along the coast which is a famous American road trip route. Unfortunately for us the weather turned poor as we left Santa Barbara and most of the journey was quite foggy, so the spectacular views of Big Sur and the Ocean that should have been spectacular were somewhat diminished! Also, it was Labour Day Weekend, a holiday in the USA, so the roads were busy and quite slow. The journey was about 7 hours in total, but we eventually made a sunny but chilly San Francisco about 6pm. That night we headed out to China Town, and managed to get a table in one of the more highly regarded Chinese restaurants which had been full the first time we were in San Francisco.
For our last day, the girls had a morning in the hotel, having what they felt was a well deserved lie-in - bless - while John and I went out. In the afternoon, the girls had some money burning a whole in their pockets, so it was another afternoon of shopping.
The last thing on our San Francisco 'must do' list, was a ride on the world famous cable cars. We rode from one end of town to the other and stopped for an early lunch at Fisherman's Wharf. That afternoon the girls flew back to the UK while we flew back to the boat early on Wednesday morning.
