One thing we will not get on this trip is scurvy due to a lack of vitamin C. I took Doug, Lance & Tony to the central market to buy fruit and vegetables early on Saturday morning. A very helpful lady told us her son could provide all we needed and deliver to the boat which sounded great. It was just as well that I had gone with them though as in their hungover states, they were arguing for 200 satsumas!! I managed to talk them down to 50, as we also had apples, pears, melons and kiwi's, as well as loads of veg. This was a good thing really as when the order arrived they had sent far more than we ordered and our bill came to €280! Everyone who visited on Saturday was given an orange and we now have a boat rule of 2 pieces of fruit per person per meal to make sure we eat it all. All the fruit had to be inspected for bugs, individually wrapped and stored in baskets strung from the ceiling which took ages - about 2 hours in all.

We set sail on Sunday after what seemed like months in Las Palmas. This is what we have been planning for over the last two years and to actually leave and start our adventure properly was quite an emotional moment for both John and I, and I think for the crew as well!

A last team photo before we left - whilst making sure we knew which way to go!

After a few last minute jobs including cleaning the bottom of the boat so that we go faster, we left the jetty to join the melee outside the breakwater waiting for the starting klaxon. Tony played us out on his saxophone (Summertime, I think).

With all the boats milling around it was quite stressful particularly for our helmsman and Skipper, John. The race boats all left 20 minutes before the cruisers but, funnily enough, as soon as we had the 5 minute warning, all the cruising class converged on the line and it was bit of a scrum getting over the line, and more than a little tense!

The start line - very crowded!
