A day out in Las Palmas

In order to justify a trip out sightseeing this afternoon we spent the morning doing jobs - the list seems to get longer rather than shorter. We had made a quite visit round the chandlers in the marina on Friday to see what was available in each. The shops are closed this Monday as it is Bank Holiday and this seems to mean that nothing gets done from about Friday lunchtime to Tuesday and everywhere is closed! We managed to get loads of kit in the chandlers and another load on the way home from the fab department store El Corte Ingles. This shops basically sells everything from designer clothes to builders buckets and fishing rods - if they don't sell it you probably don't need it!
We went towards the old town area again as we didn't really explore very far on Thursday night as we were too hungry and stopped at the first nice Tapas bar! The whole area is very shady with cobbled, narrow streets and high buildings with ornate balconies. The houses have huge, solid wooden doors which open up onto beautiful interior courtyards. This area is a world away from the tourist resorts in the south of the island. This part of the town is centred around the Plaza de Santa Ana and the cathedral.

Lunch was in a small bar which served beautiful food at extremely reasonable prices - we tried to book a crew dinner but they only open for lunch, not dinner!
After lunch we did the while tourist thing and hopped on the red sight-seeing bus tour again - we should get a discount now for regular use! After the tour we got off at the beach and went on search of an ice cream shop and sat in the sun - it was 28˚ at 6pm, starting to get chilly!! Rest over, we hit the department store and got a few more things off our list before heading back to the marina bar to catch up on emails over a cold beer.
