Plan A had been to return to the marina in Fajardo on the Friday night and then on Saturday travel to San Juan, for a night in a hotel and some sightseeing before Alex and Naomi flew home on Sunday.  Now, what is it they say about the best laid plans? I hadn't anticipated a problem, as I had read about the big street festival, the San Sebastian, or SanSe, which was on between 15-18 January, it was only when we chatting to come people in Culebra, that I realised I had been looking at last years' dates and that this years it was on between 17-20 January.  This meant that finding a hotel was impossible unless you were prepared to pay about £1800 per room per night to stay at the Ritz-Carlton!
As a plan B, John decided to drive us into town, and then we would return to the boat to sleep - a little disappointing, but at least we weren't missing out entirely.
If you speak to Alex, he and Naomi had a fabulous day and loved the festival, so much so they are already talking about coming again next year - John and I thought it was a little disjointed and disappointing - maybe it's our age!  There were loads of things planned throughout the day, 3 parades, various venues round the town with bands etc playing, but none of this actually came about - although we were separate during the day, none of us saw a parade, although Alex and Naomi did see a couple of bands.  The festival is supposed to be celebrating San Sebastian, and have a certain amount of religious content, but this has long been lost and it is now basically a drunken free-for-all, with beer stands on every corner!  We spoke to a few locals both in town and before we went and they all said, be careful, stick together and leave the town reasonably early, certainly no later than about 11pm.  There were loads of young people and teenagers, but any family atmosphere has long gone - gosh I sound like a right old misery!!!
To escape from the crowds in the afternoon, John and I headed for a cigar lounge - we sat on huge sofas, sipping rum and (John), smoking a cigar, I had a small amaretto flavoured cigar so I didn't feel left out - I don't think cigars get much girlier than that!

Even our cafe con leche were celebrating!

A display of gold shoes - there were 1136 pairs of shoes representing all the victims of violent crime in San Juan over the last 12 months, some are actually the shoes of the victims themselves

  Line dancing Puerto Rico style

This shop sold only popcorn - some of the flavours sounded gross - bacon, pizza, as well as good old salted and sweet

 Alex looking cool

 Enjoying a 'yarda' of ale!

Tapas in our favourite restaurant at the end of the day
