Day 4 - Bermuda to New York

We have arrived safely exactly 4 days after we left Bermuda. The last 24
hours have certainly been varied! We started yesterday afternoon with
blazing sunshine and sitting out sunbathing on the back deck. By late
afternoon the wind had come up and we were sailing along enjoying perfect
conditions. The weather was so good that we barbecued steaks on the back
of the boat for a treat on our last night at sea. John spotted a whale
this afternoon, it looked to be a small humpback from the striations on
it’s body. This is the first time we have seen a whale.
We were going a bit fast, so we reefed the sails well down before dark.
We wanted to arrive at the entrance to the traffic separation scheme at
the end of the Hudson River at first light this morning.
As we approached, the water got busier and busier, there were an awful lot
of boats around, and it was a challenge keeping up with who was where! Day
break made this a little easier, but just before it came light we had a
run in with a very large trawling fishing boat - for what ever reason, the
boat did not show up on either our AIS system or even the radar, a sharp
detour was needed by both us and the nearby cruise ship to avoid any
problems. Despite being reasonably close to land, we got our first view
of the New York skyline at 9am this morning, although it was very hazy
with fog. Eventually, the fog cleared to a gorgeous sunny day. We are
now tied up in the marina and heading off to take a bite out of the Big
Apple!
Photos of the trip up-river to the marina will follow in the next blog.
