We extended our stay in Vila Real so we could spend a morning doing all the boring jobs that we had been putting off, like working out why the water tank gauge wasn't working properly and trying to sort out the satellite phone & generally catching up on housework, (me) and emails, (John). For the first time in ages we have had a decent, free internet link so we have made the best of it.
This afternoon we decided to explore the river tributary we had seen yesterday which seemed to lead towards a small town with what looked like a large, old castle and also some newer fortifications as well.

As we went down the river the water got narrower and narrower and after we had wiggled down a few stretches we came to our first dead end - there was a road which we thought we would get under but there was no bridge just a small water outlet.

We back tracked and went a different way until we hit another dead end - we turned here because the water was getting even narrower and the bottom was starting to show! Finally we got under the road bridge - fortunately the tide wasn't too high as we might have banged our heads on the bridge!
The river took us up towards the town through fields planted with olives trees and marshes. The bird life here was extensive and we saw lots of different ones, some we had seen before and others new, but as we don't know our birds we can't tell you what they were. We are going to purchase a bird book soon so we can be more clued up. Again, as yesterday, we saw storks and herons, but also huge grey birds, about twice the size of storks, and some small thin white birds with long legs and necks. As we went along the river the birds flew ahead of us, stopped and as we caught up set off again so we got really good views of them.

Today is our last day in Portugal and tomorrow we head for Spain, we need to remember to put our watches forward an hour, sleep all afternoon and party all night!!
