Our first day sailing this year!  We had some misgivings about the weather, as the front coming through was still supposed to be a bit lively until the weekend.  However, it was only 21 miles or 3 hours to Culebra, and the weather in the marina seemed to be calming down so we decided to set off.  As it turned out, the weather was calm and the winds a perfect 15-20 knots.  The trip over was lovely, very relaxing, and a world away from our previous experiences this year of battering head first into huge winds and waves!  Culebra was just as lovely as we remembered - a really sleepy, small island.  We headed to the bar for a well earned beer before spending Alex and Naomi's first night at anchor having a BBQ and chilling on deck - a perfect start.
The next morning got off to a less than perfect start for everyone, when Alex, awake at 6am due to jet lag, decided that he was desperate to see a Caribbean sunrise!  Having crashed through the boat to the companionway hatch, he proceeded to thump around the deck until he was absolutely sure we were all awake as well - there was a real moment of poetic justice when he banged his head on the door loud enough for us all to hear!

Once we had all tried and failed to go back to sleep, we got up and had breakfast before heading out to the reef for a swim and snorkel.  We found what might have been some unexploded ordinance from when the US Army used the islands as target practice - they missed regularly and as such there are lots of areas that are no-go for anchoring due to unexploded bombs - so we stayed well clear! There weren't a huge amount of fish, but the water was cool and very refreshing!  On Saturday afternoon, we went ashore to the 'town', but we are clearly out of practice in Caribbean living as we forgot that most places close early on Saturday and don't open at all on Sunday!
Sunday was our first 'beach' day in what seems like ages.  We went to Playa Flamenco on the northern side of the island and spent the day lazing in the sun. Swimming was a bit of a challenge as the northerly swell was bringing in large waves and a rip tide current along the shore, even getting in and out was challenging, never mind actually swimming!
