In search of a bit of culture, and to get off the beaten track of the tourist trail in Los Cristianos, we headed up the mountains to Teide, which towers 12,000ft above Tenerife. It took about 2 hours to drive up to the cable car which takes you the rest of the way to the top. The final part of the journey has to be done on foot, with a special permit, but as it was about -13˚ we weren't too bothered about not being able to go up!! The cable car ride gives you a fabulous view of the landscape all the way up and from the top there are clear views of La Gomera and other islands. The film, 'The Planet of The Apes' was made in the Teide national park. After about 10 minutes at the top taking photos, we decided that this was more than enough and we got the next car down and headed straight for the coffee bar for a hot drink!
