Back to cool weather in Mystic, CT

What a difference three weeks makes!! When we left Mystic at the end of September, the weather was still warm and sunny, mid October it is a different kettle of fish entirely, we are running the heating almost constantly while we are on board, and on Saturday morning woke up to frosty air and frozen jetties - we were not expecting that so soon, the quicker we can get south to warmer climes, the better!
Back at the boat it was the usual round of switching the systems back on, putting away new bits of kit, and generally getting used to being on board again - this happens very quickly now, it is easier to acclimatise to boat life than home life. One slight inconvenience was our strange tasting water! Before leaving the boat, John had put some bleach into the water to stop it going stale and horrid, but in his haste perhaps used a bit too much - we had very strange tasting tea and have been having ridiculously long showers trying to empty the tanks - why is it when you are trying to run the water off it seems to last for ages, but if water is limited, it disappears quickly however careful you are???
As we had booked the boat into the marina for a month we had a few days to spare before heading down to New York and decided to hire a car and head north to Vermont for a spot of fall leaf-peeping, which is the local term for admiring the foliage that New England is famous for. When buying maps in the local book shop we were somewhat dismayed to find that firstly we might be a little late for the best foliage, but also that when we had frost the previous night, some of Vermont had snow!! John, ever optimistic when it comes to the weather, had planned on taking his shorts - he soon changed his mind and packed thermals instead!
At present, the plan is to leave Mystic on Thursday morning, it will probably take about 3 days to sail to New York, we will anchor overnight on each day, and arrive on Saturday afternoon, all things being equal - there have been some quite high winds forecast, and some generally unpleasant weather, so this may hamper our progress, but hopefully not too much.
