After 10 days almost on land in the marina, we slipped our lines and headed out into the open sea for our first sail of the New Year - we had almost forgotten how!! We had even managed to forget how long it takes to leave a marina, what with water hoses, electric cables etc. Added to this we had to pay a last visit to the boulangerie for baguettes and tarte tartin before we even thought about the official and time consuming business of checking out.
Two hours later than we planned we headed out into the bay. The is one large unmarked shallow area just outside the marina which we had made a note to avoid but we needn't have worried, it was clearly marked by the 150m gin palace that had gone aground on it - whoops!!
Once going we had a lively sail across the Anguilla channel and around the corner to the northern side of the Island and our anchorage for the next few days, Road Bay. We ended up dropping our hook quite far out as closer in it was charter boat city, they were all tightly packed in & probably with minimal chain - we like enough room to dump 40m of chain, even in 6m of water, can't be too careful!!
Anguilla has only 2 bays in which you can anchor overnight, both of which are next to each other. We think we will only be able to stay until Thursday as there is a decent northerly swell which will make the anchorage rolly. We have hired a car to see the island as to visit other bays by boat is seriously expensive, they charge you £40 per day for a cruising permit and insist you take a mooring in the other bays at a further charge of £10, all this and you have to be back where you started by the time it goes dark to re-anchor - madness!!
