Tuamotu islands – Fakarava – November 22nd – December 2nd 2011

Fakarava North East

m_Rotoava (Fakarava) (7).jpgAfter an early start at 5.00h from the lovely Anse Amyot in Toau, unfortunately without our friends from Pacific Bliss due to an engine problem, and a bumpy ride with squalls of up to 30 kn we anchor off Rotoava, the capital with 150 inhabitants of the biggest motu of Fakarava, one of the biggest atolls of the Tuamotu Archipelago. We crossed the dreaded pass at the intended time of 13.00h local with no current whatsoever, so impeccable timing. We are welcomed by our friends from Wadda, Moe & Margaret, last news we knew is that they would head for Australia, which would have been a very close call looking at the time they still had to make it on time. They decided otherwise! We are invited for a lovely supper. Next morning very early Margaret surprises us with fresh baguette for the first time in a long time!

m_Rotoava (Fakarava) (1).jpgWe are anchored just in front of the little village Rotoava, only some hundred inhabitants but one of the biggest villages of the Tuamotu and thus comparatively abundant supplies. Amazingly, there is a good paved road along the coastline where we find two magasins (shops). We heard that the supply boat arrives on Thursday every two weeks, we are lucky, the following day it arrives so we have fresh vegetables and fruit again. The last time we were able to buy these was in Ua Pou, the last Marquesian island we visited, about a month ago.

The following day Pacific Bliss arrives! They must have had an angel on their shoulders. Only an hour after we left Toau the fishing boat arrived their. They had the part Pacific Bliss needed for the engine! We spend an afternoon getting in touch with the landlubbers at home.
