Hi Folks,
Well after the whale day we sought of had a day off
, the morning was very overcast, so we went for showers and did some washing up
at the hotel, off for a stroll down town late morning, the big container
ship had squeezed its way into the port and was busily off loading the islands
supplies , cars,containers full of tonic, there's a great shortage for us gin
drinkers at the present , and chillers full of meat and frozen goods, the locals
had bought there vegetable products down for loading into containers to ship
back to we guess Nuka loafa the capital.
Its a very feudal system here with the king owning
everything and doling it out piecemeal to the subjects , doesn't that remind you
of somewhere !
anyway I guess he's a Mr 25% of everything that
goes on in the tourist front as well , all his relatives seem to be patrons of
this or that , all the land is rented for a 50 year period then reverts back to
the king so we are told .
He seems to get a lot of funding from the EU
though as the two schools, the new wharf , market place and fish market were all
funded by the good old EU it makes a change to see that your money has gone at
last to a good cause , these guys don't have much and if it improves there
quality of life I'm all for it as they are a very helpful and friendly
people.
On the subject of friendliness our friends
and I ran across Lyn and Larry Pardy who rolled up some days ago on there way
back to NZ in there little boat, very traditional .. anyway it transpires
that they have a boat yard in Nelson were they reside .. in the course of
conversation it was revealed that the sooner they ban EPERBS , sat phones, GPS
systems the better of cruising will be , and that half of us cruising folk
shouldn't be on the water anyway as we are unsafe , as I looked at the pair of
them who are moored not far away I did note that they have a brand new outboard
on there traditional hard bottom fibre glass boat ! don't think I will be seeing
them again , and I think a lot of people were quite shocked at there attitude
..
The unworthy ones !
