Flying Fish aboard

This morning I was on the deck and puzzled about some mess including some blood stains. Obviously I suspected an Agatha Christie type of murder but a quick role call confirmed that the whole crew of just me was present and correct. More seriously I assumed I had unknowingly gashed myself sail handling yesterday but then I spotted the flying fish nearby. About 10 inches long - much bigger than the only one to land on the deck on the outward passage.

It is only my third day and still miles and miles from home, but it is raining. Not hard, but a thin light drizzle and with the wind behind me it comes into the main hatch unless I close everything up.

I made slow progress through the night and had to get up quite a few times. This morning the wind is from dead behind me, not the fastest point of sailing by far, but I have set and goosewinged the big reaching sail and am now going at nearly 6 knots. Madeira is 200 miles astern, and the nearest mainland is Cape St Vincent 322 miles away. I am exact on the latitude of Gibraltar, 500 miles away and it is less than 1000 miles to home.

While I have been writing this the rain stopped and a bit of sun is shining!

Peter
