Good Fortune and Personal Goals

As some people know, Emily and I had originally planned a retirement cruise to the Azores and Madeira. At the time (3 years ago) I was still recovering from a head injury and thought how well I had done to get back to normal so quickly. Little did I realise. In due course the plans were shelved and secretly I realised I might never be fit enough for ocean sailing again. I never owned up to this and we have had a couple of great Summer cruises, one to Scotland and Orkney and one to Brittany..
But I continued to improve just as the neurologists told me. We started to talk about the Azores again and Emily whose judgement I trust completely said why not. It became a realistic option. My old rowing mate David reminded me of a drunken lunch when we were medical students (just the other day) in about 1973 when I apparently told him of my ambition to do a single handed ocean passage - gosh it would have been much harder then. The flame was rekindled.
And so here I am. At 1000 tomorrow morning I will have been at sea for a week and for 5 days I have been going to windward. I am of course hugely fortunate to have such a comfortable and seaworthy yacht. My spirits are high. 700 miles on the clock. Good fortune indeed.
Next entry will be back in the facetious style, I promise.
