A day ashore

We hired a car yesterday and spent the day ashore on St Jorge. The island being volcanic is of course incredibly steep. The roads are narrow and each time we dropped down to the coast we had to negotiate a series of alarming hair pin bends. For much of the drive we were in dense fog - the same hanging cloud we looked up at from the sea. Nevertheless it was well worth doing.

Our first stop was at Faja (Bay, I think) days Almas where a wonderful bathing area has been created from a natural rock pool with some extra stone walling. But it was not really bathing weather even though it was warm and humid.

After coffee we drove on to the island's second town of Calheta. Here they were preparing for a fiesta. Stalls were opening up on the dockside, ready to sell food and drinks and a band stand had been assembled. Lights and bunting were being put up and the best decorations were made from hundreds of blue Hydrangeas. Clearly this was going to be quite an occasion but it was not starting until the evening, so we did not see it in action.

When we drove across to the North of the island, the fog suddenly cleared and we were in sunshine. Completing our tour we stopped at the biggest supermarket and stocked up with some fresh chicken and fruit and veg. Drinks on a neighbouring yacht and supper ashore.

We cleared out with Jose the marina harbourmaster ready for an early start. Jose is really helpful and will get a mention in the RCC pilotage information. He watches yachts approach on AIS and plans in advance where to put them. In this way he makes best use of the limited number of berths and finds a good spot (somehow) for everyone, even when it all seems full.
