The Captain's Cocktail Party

Yesterday I was very chuffed to get an invitation to the Captain's Cocktail Party. Apparently places are always at a premium with pushy guests befriending ship's officers and letting them know that they are "available". This time there are said to be some rather top drawer guests on board so I just assumed I would not get invited. There is always a celebrity or VIP on board whose name is kept closely guarded until he or she appears for cocktails. There had been all sorts of rumours about the VIP this time some pushing the bounds of reality with names such as Princess Di and even the Kray brothers being mentioned. Hot favourite was Prince Harry, back from opening the Invicta Games. So you can imagine my delight when a crisp invitation card was pushed under my cabin door!

It was the perfect evening. Sunshine and a calm sea (apparently the sailors would like some more wind). I dressed and made my way aft to the quarter deck. Catching my reflection in some of the gleaming brass work I realised how kind the years have been to me (or why my tailor charges so much).

The party was a terrible disappointment. First, I could not attract the attention of any of the waiters and ended up getting my own drink. Then, nobody seemed to want to speak to me. There was truly not a word of decent conversation to be had. I left after a single drink and dined alone, telling my steward to serve me in silence.

Later I was told that the VIP was me.
Such are the joys of single handed sailing!!! Don't worry, I have not totally lost the plot, just a bit of fun!
