the little harbor at Knidos the best of this leg so far. This is the site
of one of the 6 cities of the Dorian confederation the former capital of
the Datca peninsula - round about 425 BC. The location is awesome. Twin
harbors separated by a narrow piece of land with pretty high mountains
surrounding each. On one side the city was built up in terraces almost all
the way to the top. Two theaters and lots of temples.
Wild flowers mainly daises and poppies growing up all over the ruins. This
is definitely the time to see this place. Everything is blooming, no heat,
no tourists and blue sky. We pulled into the restaurant dock (the only modern structure
here other than the collection booth at entrance to the ruins) and are tied up
side too and almost aground in about 6 feet of water. 25TL a night with
electricity and water. We were the second boat in here at about 1:30 PM but
the dock quickly filled by 3:00 and tour boats (Gullets) filled the harbor
by dusk.
The ruin is mostly un-restored and the site is about as you would imagine an old
city would look like after 2500 years of neglect. Their is even a fluted
column half buried in the sand at the beach; like something out of planet of
the apes. It probably fell off the boat to the England or Germany during
loading after the first 'restoration'...
