Hi, just a quick report to let everyone know we are
doing fine. We finally have some favorable winds. We sailed 168
miles yesterday for an average over the ground speed of 7 Kts. Today
we had a little less wind but all in all a great day. Waves are building,
function of having wind, and it is difficult to cook below as the
boat 'she's rocking and Rollin's.
Had our first brake down today. The
chain that works the hydraulic steering pump in the binical separated at on of
the master links. The Autopilot continued to work as George and I fixed
the broken part enough to at least work 'temporarily. I know I took some
spare links with us but with everyone helping us get packed we could not find
them - they in here someplace... and in a safe place too! Glad we found it
before the parts fell into the bilge below the engine or we needed to steer
manually like to avoid another ship.
It is about 8:30 PM and we are in our get ready for
dark routine. The generator is running for an hour or so to charge the
batteries - lights and electronics. Everyone is chagrining up their
battery powered toys also. The bright side of no refrigeration is no
electric consumption. Chris and George are in the cockpit having after
dinner tea and cleaning up the all day feeding frenzy. Matt cooked tonight
and we had spaghetti. Last night George made a canned ham with assorted
vegetables.
Matt and I are down below. He is trying to
learn the finer points of the chartplotter / gps and I am writing this
e-mail. We have it set up to take two hour watch shifts at night.
That way everyone can get a 6 hour sleep time at some time during the day.
Called for weather tonight and could not get through. So I will fire up
the sat phone and do it that way. We have a pretty good idea what to
expect over the next couple of days.
As we head further north it is cooling off. I
changed out my flip flops and short pants for some gleans an a long sleeve shirt
- at least for the nights.
