Had enough wind to sail all day yesterday until around sun set. Started the
engine around 11 PM and ran it until my morning watch 7:00 AM. Wind started
to blow again and we are doing 6 to 7 kts. Great sailing! A pleasant
surprise since our current weather is calling for pretty much calms to
variable winds. We are about 573 miles from Lisbon and moving well.
Yesterday July 2 from noon to noon we made 120 miles.
We had not seen a ship since leaving the Azores but have seen two since
sunrise. Radar is working well in fact we spotted the ships their first. I
radioed the second, a large container ship that appeared to be on a too
close for comfort passing and he altered course to miss us by about 2 miles.
As we approach the coast of Portugal I think we can expect to see more and
more shipping and big fishing boat operations.
Everyone slept well last night in relative calm with the drone of the
engine. Doing a little cleaning up today. Matt is vacuuming out the
cockpit - pit is a good word for it as we are eating all our meals there and
snacking through the night as well. Scraped Squish, the squid, off the deck
and gave him an official burial at sea this morning, I think an albatross
got him before he sank far.
New taste treat... I made bread and eggs (hole in a piece of bread with an
egg fried in the center) using George's bread dipping sauce left over from
last night's Italian dinner. Garlic bread, olive oil, and eggs? Oopa! We
got some super strength garlic at the farmers market in the Azores that
really cleans out your sinuses! Also fried up some Azore's sausage for
breakfast. Nasty stuff with big hunks of fat in it. We thought it might
come out like bacon if we cooked it. Even the albatross wouldn't touch the
stuff when we through it overboard... not all overseas adventures are good
ones. Which reminds me... Mary please bring my wine book when you come
over - the one I had in Europe with all the labels. We found some really
good Portuguese wines in the grocery store concentrating on the local Azores
stuff for about 2.5 euros. Found a few undrinkable also.
We will try another pot roast in the pressure cooker tonight if it does not
get too rough. Not sure of the cut of meat we bought in the butcher shop.
Pretty sure it is beef and it looked as much like a USA style pot roast as
anything they had there.
