Up the river was somewhat hair raising [not that I have much of that] with sandbanks scattered across the river and the chart plotter didn’t seem to mark much up river. Jacaré marina, where we are now, is great. A small enterprise run by two Frenchmen Nicolas and François - Nicolas is the chef at the small but good café and François runs the office and I suspect the business side of things. The mooring is at least semi satisfactory - as we are in a river there are tide and current changes each six hours and ones mooring lines need regular checking. The main activity here other than relaxing, refuelling and re-victualling the boat is CARNIVAL. So on Sunday we headed in Recifé for the big one: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There were about 6 ‘stages’ with latin american music and some western pop playing ![]() ![]() and masses and masses of ‘street food’ which was largely delicious although we did not know necessarily what we were eating. ![]() ![]() It was great fun - Then on Tuesday we went to a different Carnival in Olinda which was not such fun with pushing massive crowds of hot sweating people in hot streets and we got totally sandwiched in the crowd and had to fight our way out. Mike [an American from yacht ‘Paradise Found’] was pick-pocketed to the tune of 500 Brazil Reals, Brian [from British yacht 'Wishanger II’] lost his i-phone with all its data and having survived all the crowds intact I was standing waiting in line for a Caiperinho [local vodka and fresh lime based iced drink] had some young black-man came running by and grabbed my rather clapped out old camera. The camera had flat batteries and was heavily corroded and luckily I had downloaded all the pictures it had except that day’s and so the loss is minor. More irritation than anything else. Not a good advertisement for Brazil Peter Forbes 0044 7836 209730 Carango Sailing Ketch Amel 54 #035 Travelling West in the Atlantic Ocean |
