This palm strewn island is home to a Kuna Indian family it is about 80 yards x 25 - they have a hut and a dugout and the next island is only about 200 yards distant with some other family then a couple of uninhabited islands in their group.
The San Blas islands, about 340 of them lie a few miles off the Caribbean coast of Panama. The islands are in small groups with many reefs in between.
I have never had such exciting sailing - navigating between two reefs about 120 meters apart and narrowing as we went further, in the lee of a wrecked yacht - a chap who missed the entrance by a few feet! We anchored up in 20 knots of wind up by the Northern reef and dropped back about 40 meters to just short of the Southern reef. The sound of surf was massive, but we calmed our selves and the anchor seemed to be holding - so we stayed and went ashore to BBQ and investigate the local Kuna Indians .
They put on a great dance show between tow grass huts and also between two intensive downpours of squall rain - one can see the wind strength form the palm trees. |
