We slipped yesterday evening to leave La Rochelle
in NNW F5-6 which gave us a cracking sail through the night with speeds up to 10
knots (i reef in the main and 2/3 jib). As expected, this morning the wind has
dropped to F3-4 and backed W. However, this evening the wind should increase
slightly and veer NW. I expect us to be rounding Cape Finisterre Saturday
morning which puts us nicely on schedule for arriving in Madeira around 13
Nov.
In the longer term it looks as though there will be
a major low in the middle of the Atlantic around 20th which we will want to
avoid. This will put us well south (but in the sunshine) so a stop in Bermuda
may be impracticable.
This morning we had our first visitors, a school of
dolphins.
It is quite chilly at the moment with 9/10 cloud.
There are scattered squalls but nothing dramatic.
Everyone has settled into the watch system well. We
are going with two people on watch through the night and switching to one person
watches during the day to give a period of extended
rest.
