We set off from Helgoland at a sensible time (10.30) not because we needed to lie in but to make the most of the strong currents up the river to Brunsbuttel which is the start of the Kiel Canal.Five miles from Cuxhaven we were hailed by a small German yacht whose engine had broken down. He spoke no English and did not have vhf or if he did he didn't know how to use it! We took his line and towed him into the marina at ten knots probably the fastest his boat had ever done!! Despite the delay we got into the lock at 5pm and tried to get to the marina at Rendsburg before dark as you are not allowed to travel on the canal after dark. We didn't quite make it and found a place to tie up for the night. This morning we motored to the marina and are spending a restful day catching up with a few jobs that needed to be done.
Tomorrow (Sunday) we will exit the Canal at Kiel and head for Heilingenhafen which is close to Fehmaen Island. We have a few days to spare so we will make a detour to Copenhagen and Malmo before finally making our way to Travemunde.
