So that was a long day – 78nm from Olafsvik to Akranes. We were up at 0530 this morning and under way by 0600. We had a good down wind sail to the last major headland at the end of the Snaefellsjokull peninsula and on round into Faxafloi bay. The sun rose over the glacier and we had magnificent views. We’d looked at the local met office forecast – which is an excellent service – and noted that the wind was due to drop as we progressed out into the bay and, sure enough an hour later we were motoring. And so it went on until the last 35nm when the wind settled in at 15 – 18 knots ahead of the beam and we soon found ourselves well heeled sitting on 8+ knots. The wind eased as we approached Akranes and, with it’s famous cement factory in sight, Fi cooked up a delicious ham and potato bake which rapidly disappeared as soon as the lines were secured on the dock. The only slight hitch – once we’d finished eating was that we had in advertently moored on the ferry dock. A kindly harbour official soon put us right and we moved to a different pontoon – shortly after the ferry / ship arrived and we were glad that we’d not stayed to act as it’s fender. So, only about 8nm to Reykjavik, the smallest capital city in the world and then we’ll be looking for a weather window to round Keflavik peninsula and on to the Westmann islands and eventually Scotland and home.
