So, the pool at Sudureyri was superb with view of the steep mountains behind the village as we soaked in the outdoor hot pool. We departed at 1400 on the 16th on an overnight passage down to Olafsvik in the shadow of the Snaefellsjokull glacier. We had the usual mixture of dead down wind sailing with the current against us and variable wind strength and direction as we sailed past the remaining west fjords. Late in the evening the current changed in our favour as we passed the last headland and motored out into Breidafjordur bay. As I came on watch at midnight the current again turned against us and I made 5nm in 90 minutes – slow. At 0400 the wind piped up and by 0600 we were cracking along at 7 kts with a short steep cross sea and everyone down below trying to stay in their bunks or rescue flying plates and spiced chutney. So we were happy to get into the shelter of Olafsvik harbour at 0900 low water and tie up to the usual fishing wharf with it’s barnacle infested tyre wall. But, well sheltered and well fendered we soon set off to sample the next hot pool facility – free for those in golden years too, can’t be bad. As we lay in the hot pool, broiling in the sunshine with the distant view of wind whipping spray off the top of a massive waterfall, the notion of a yachting rally came to mind – never mind Scotch Whisky, how about Icelandic hot pools.
