                | Well, its been a long, somewhat tedious and
occasionally nerve wracking 1000 nm from Langkawi but today our over worked
motor boat lifted to the swell of the Indian ocean as we left Krakatoa and
headed to our last anchorage on the southern tip of Java. We were up early
and were collecting rocks for the boys and peering into fumeroles high
on Krakatoa's ash cone by 0700. The crater above was wreathed in sulphurous
fumes so we gave that a miss - but it was great to poke around on the slopes of
such a sleeping giant wondering at the huge lava bombs as big as small cars
which had clearly all too recently been deposited more than a mile from the
crater. Some 12 hours and 40 nm later we find ourselves anchored in a narrow
channel protected by Pilau Peucang. There's a ranger station ashore with wild
pigs, monkeys and deer on the beach. Rare Javan rhinos are reputed to
live deeper in the forest. So tomorrow we have to mend our headsail and do some
exploring ashore and up the nearby river. 06 44.89S 105 15.77E |
