So we arrived here in Vopnafjordur at 2100 last night after a varied 60nm
passage. The passage down Seydisfjordur was a partly sunny motor for 10nm into a
light E wind. We had hoped that as we rounded the headland we might set some
headsail, but the wind followed us for a while and the adverse current build to
3 knots. We clawed our way around Gettinganes point by closing into 15 m depth
and as we headed out across Heradfloi bay the tide changed in our favour
reducing the adverse current to 0.6 knots. The wind veered and we set full sail
and turned the engine off. We rounded the last headland and bore away down wind
for the last 12 nm to Vopnafjordur. As we approached the harbour the following
wind had increased to around 30 knots with choppy seas. A ship was manoeuvring
in the entrance to the harbour which was directly into the low setting sun
making spotting the leading marks into the rock strewn harbour a bit
interesting. Fortunately, the lifeboat come pilot vessel came out to the ship
and following her course back in solved our problem. Berthing was interesting in
a confined pool on the inside of the lifeboat pontoon with a brisk 25 knots from
astern. Happily the lifeboat crew were still around and with 5 strong sets of
arms they hauled Threeships against the wind on to a very secure pontoon. The
hot spiced wine that Fi had prepared was very welcome all round. The weather has
now closed in with mist rain and fresh winds, so it looks like we’re here for a
few days and will investigate car hire for some touring
inland. |
