We were just getting underway at 0900
on Sunday morning when the generously
accomodating sailing dentist who had filled Chris' tooth in Antigua came alongside in his dinghy to announce that a friend on another boat hitherto unknown to us, but transpired was a retired GP from Exeter, had just dropped his outboard motor in 8 meters of water. Could we retrieve it for him? So out came all the diving gear and one of the new dive tanks and shortly afterwards up came one rather salty Mercury outboard. We then had a lovelyhard on the wind
sail from the southern tip of Guadaloupe
to the Saintes where a madly social
time ensued. On one day we had friends
for lunch and supper and had to turn down two invitations for drinks.
And people ask what we do out here
for six months.
We failed to manage a dive in the
Saintes but organised a couple of dives here in Dominica.
The first of these was one of the
most spectacular so far. The colour of the coral
and sponges were vivid blues and
browns and oranges and the visiibility was near
perfection. The climax was when we swam through a narrow tunnel about 40 feet long and then negotiated a small arch to come out on top of where the tunnel lay. Permeating through the limestone seabed there emerged lots of streams of tiny bubbles, as the air we had breathed out escaped to the surface from the tunnel beneath. It was like swimming in champagne.
Swimming in champagne.
Yesterday we hired a car and toured the island ending up at the airport to collect Gill and Peter Price who are sailing with us for the next fortnight. The
windward side of Dominica in benign mood
Today we are chilling out to allow them to recover from their flights and for us to .....er..... well ........... just chill out. |
